Chubby Checker kicks off Oaklawn Concert Series

Oaklawn's Finish Line Theatre will open its 2011 schedule with the Chubby Checker Show on Thursday, June 16, at 7 p.m.  The new and improved Finish Line Theater will have the honor of celebrating the 50th birthday of "The Twist", the song which made Chubby Checker a household name in the 60s.

Not only will the crowd be entertained by an array of Checker hits, including "The Twist", but Chubby will offer up some of his famous impressions of great rock 'n roll stars of the past.

Chubby is particularly proud of the fact that the "Twist" changed the style of dancing in the United States.  He calls it "dancing apart to the beat".  Born in South Carolina and raised in South Philadelphia, Checker credits Dick Clark and his famed TV show "American Bandstand" for helping create a national audience for his music.  He also credits Clark's wife for his name.  "She added the 'Checker' to the Chubby," he laughs.

"The Twist" remains to this day the only number one song on the charts to return for a second time.  It hit the top of the charts in both 1960 and 1962, staying on the charts for an amazing nine months.

Checker's music is credited with being the inspiration for such dances as the Pony, the Jerk, the Hully Gully, the Fly and the Hucklebuck.

Tickets are still available for Thursday's performance by calling Oaklawn at either 1-800-Oaklawn, extension 340, or (501) 623-4411, extension 340.
