City issues RFP for four additional sections of Majestic Hotel complex

HOT SPRINGS – The City of Hot Springs released a Request for Proposals for abatement and demolition services for what is commonly known as the Majestic Hotel “red brick” portion, along with the Lanai Tower, Lanai Suites and parking deck structures. 

The property, consisting of approximately 5.1 acres, is located at 101 Park Avenue at the intersection of Central and Whittington avenues in downtown Hot Springs. 

The project scope includes abatement and disposal of hazardous materials from the four structures, with accompanying air monitoring; salvage of fixtures and materials when feasible; demolition and removal of construction debris, erosion and sediment control measures; removal and disposal of any underground storage tanks; and security for the buildings and grounds during the contract work.

Re-Fashion Bash returns to Benton

BENTON, Ark. - Recycle Saline is hosting its second annual Re-Fashion Bash “Where Green is the New Black” Saturday, May 7th. 

Re-Fashion Bash is an upbeat recycling fashion show highlighting Saline County students on the runway.  They will walk the runway wearing trash that has been turned into treasure, showing off their fashion in hopes of winning top prize money.

The Benton Event Center doors will open at 5 p.m. and the show will start at 6 p.m.

There will be first ($500), second ($250), and third ($100) place prizes awarded to the top designers.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.00. All the money raised from Re-Fashion Bash goes to the YEA! Team (Youth Environmental Ambassadors) program sponsored by Recycle Saline.

Hot Springs to unveil historic fountain

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - A ceremony unveiling the historic National Humane Alliance Water Trough Fountain will take place at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 7 at the intersection of Malvern Avenue and Broadway Street.

The solid granite fountain dates back to the early 1900s when the National Humane Alliance placed an estimated 125 animal fountains on city streets across America.

The Alliance was founded in 1897 by Hermon Lee Ensign, a wealthy business tycoon with a great love of animals. Ensign’s goal was to educate people to be considerate of animals and of each other.

Wold renowned Kinsey Collection Comes to MTCC

Join MTCC for the opening of our largest exhibit to date, African American Treasures from the Kinsey Collection. This once in a life changing exhibit, that is currently on display at Epcot Center at Walt Disney World will open at MTCC on Friday, April 8, at 6PM. The exhibit contains rare, one of a kind artifacts that will be displayed in Arkansas for the first time ever. These artifacts work to dispel the myth of absence and demonstrate that African American history is American history.

The opening will feature a presentation by the Kinseys, refreshments, and live entertainment provided by Rodney Block and the Real Music Lovers.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - If you are feeling the luck of the Irish on Thursday then downtown Hot Springs is where you need to be. 

On March 17, four-leaf clovers and anything green will cover the streets of Hot Springs, Ark. This is all in celebration for St. Patrick's Day.

The city is known for having the world's shortest parade celebrating this irish holiday. Their schedule of events leading up to the historic parade, include:

4:30 p.m.- Blarney Stone Kissing Contest at Arkansas Blarney Stone

5:30 p.m. - Festivities kick off with special guests at Bridge Street

6:25 p.m. - Measuring of the parade route at Bridge Street

6:30 p.m. - World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade at Bridge Street

Following the parade will be a free concert by The Bacon Brothers.

Garland Co. organization speaks out against suicide

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - The Garland County Suicide Prevention Coalition is hosting an event that will promote local artists and raise awareness for a silent but deadly disease that is affecting millions across America. 

The United Way of Garland County and the Arkansas Department of Health is hosting Hot Springs' first Suicide Prevention Art Exhibition Showcase. In 2014, Garland County was reportedly rated as the 3rd highest suicide county in Arkansas. On March 10, officials with the "Cracked, Not Broken Suicide Prevention Conference" are hoping to decrease those numbers. 

On March 10, the Garland County Suicide Prevention Coalition will present internationally recognized speaker Kevin Hines, who after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder of the age of 19 jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge, to speak about how he continues to fight the mental battle. He is one of only 34 to survive the fall, and the only one to regain full physical mobility.
