The public is invited to meet Duren and to visit with former members of the Bathers team (including Jack Bales, Tony Zini, and Ed White).

Historic football rivalry presented by St. Joseph’s Mercy

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- Two of the region’s most long-standing traditions will come together on Saturday, November 12 as St. Joseph’s Mercy presents the 85th Battle of the Ravine.

St. Joseph’s Mercy was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in Hot Springs in 1888. Just seven years later, in 1885, Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist played football for the first time in Arkadelphia.

They’ll meet for the 85th time at 1 p.m. Saturday at A.U. Williams Field on the Ouachita Baptist campus in Arkadelphia. Each team has 39 victories in the series with six games finishing tied.

The Mercy Battle of the Ravine is one of the most unique rivalries in all of sports with the Henderson State and Ouachita Baptist campuses separated by only U.S. Highway 67 in Arkadelphia. It’s the only college football game in America in which the visiting team walks to a road game.

The announcement was made on Nov. 7 at St.

Oaklawn Stars Continue to Progress toward Breeders’ Cup

Below are a selection of notes on Oaklawn horses competing in the Breeders’ Cup:

Flat Out – The 2009 Smarty Jones winner, a leading contender for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic, returned to the track Tuesday morning and jogged two miles under exercise rider Otto Aguilar after shedrowing Monday following his Sunday breeze. Trainer Scooter Dickey, who began his career as a jockey in the 1950s at Oaklawn and has been training the Hot Springs track since the 1950s, reported that the 5-year-old son of Flatter was fresh and on the muscle.

“He got mad because we didn’t let him gallop,” Dickey said. “He went one round and started on the next round and he started giving the rider a little trouble, just getting into the bit and wanting to go. So he’s fine.”

Flat Out will get his way on Wednesday, when he is expected to gallop about a mile and a half.
