Officials fight spread of Chronic Wasting Disease

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Last month, The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission confirmed an elk was the first case of Chronic Wasting Disease in the natural state. Since then, two deer have also tested positive for the deadly disease.

While the disease can’t be contracted to humans, it is still something Arkansans should take seriously.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn management made the decision to cancel Thursday’s nine-race card after more than five inches of rain left the track too saturated for racing.

“The safety of the horses and riders is always our first concern,” said Director of Racing David Longinotti. “The rain began about 3 p.m. Tuesday and has barely stopped since.”

Oaklawn remains open for gaming and simulcast racing. The game room will remain open until 3 a.m. 

Live racing is scheduled to resume Friday with a 1:30 p.m. first post. 

Bryant citizens can voice opinions on park improvements

BRYANT, Ark., —The Bryant Parks Department is now offering citizens the opportunity to prioritize their city park improvements via an online survey. The information will be gathered through the end of the year in order to establish a priority list for future parks improvements.  Utilizing the suggestions of multiple community organizations and Bryant citizens, the survey is comprised of over 50 multiple choice questions that rank each assessed need using a Likert (ranked average) scale of the comprehensive results. The data resulting from this survey will be compiled from now until December 31 at 11:59 p.m. Each survey must be completed in its entirety to be accepted as a qualifying survey.

Roller Coaster Race Coming to Magic Springs on Oct. 17

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Roller Coaster Race announced that registration is now open for its original-concept race coming to Magic Springs in Hot Springs, Ark. on Saturday, October 17.

The race takes place on the second weekend of “Magic Screams,” the park’s Halloween-themed event, and marks Roller Coaster Race’s sixth and final event of its 2015 season.

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE – Celebrate love, peace and music at the second annual Villagestock on Saturday, September 26 at Grove Park.

This event, sponsored by Boomers Rock and Hot Springs Village Recreation, will have non-stop music, food vendors, fun and games. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at HSVTicketsales.com.

The gate opens at 1 p.m., and the music never stops! Moonshine Mafia takes the stage at 1:30 p.m., followed by Crash Meadow at 3:45 p.m. and Doctor/Doctor at 6 p.m. Solar Federation will close out the evening in the 8:15 to 10 p.m. time slot.

“We have two stages set up this year,” said Stacy Hoover, Director of Recreation Operations. “It’s going to be wall to wall music.” While the main stage is setting up for the next headliner band, singer/songwriters will be performing on the side stage. Plus, there will be outdoor games, trivia, a cash bar, raffles, food vendors and more.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – The Hot Springs Blues & BBQ Festival, presented by Budweiser, will be headlined by the Los Lonely Boys Saturday, Sept. 19 and Keb’ Mo’ Sunday, Sept. 20. The event, hosted jointly by Oaklawn and the Spa City Blues Society, will take place in Oaklawn’s infield, and will also feature some of the region’s best barbeque.

“We are very excited to bring the Los Lonely Boys and Keb’ Mo’ to Hot Springs,” said Rob Pratt, President of the Spa City Blues Society. “Partnering with Oaklawn has really allowed us to take this event to a whole new level.”

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (July 30, 2015) – The Forrest Wood Cup, presented by Walmart, will return to Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Ark. August 20-23 to crown bass fishing’s top angler of 2015.

Hosted by Visit Hot Springs and the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, the tournament will feature 50 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for the sport’s biggest awards of $500,000 cash in the pro division and $50,000 cash in the co-angler division.
