Joey's prints for sale

One of the brightest moments of my professional life at Today's THV was when Joey The Garden Cat found his way into the Weather Garden.  It didn't take long to recognize he was a show stealer with his adorable antics, photogenic features and commanding attitude.

The introduction of Facebook helped launch his popularity…not only in Arkansas but all over the world.  And then when Animal Planet featured him in a segment of "Must Love Cats" -- well, Joey's appeal became electric and his fans demanded more.

So, as his primary caretaker I took on the role of Momma/Agent and what a treat it is to hear from and interact with his fans.

Rescued puppies up for adoption Saturday

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) – Several puppies rescued from a Hot Springs puppy mill operation will be looking for a good home Saturday.

The dogs will be up for adoption Saturday from 10 am – 3 pm at an event hosted by Stop Animal Cruelty and the ASPCA.

You may recall: authorities raided an alleged puppy mill back in November, rescuing about 175 young dogs.

Mary Ann Taft, president of SAC in Hot Spring County, says there are 20 puppies up for adoption. The remaining dogs are being sent to other shelters.

According to Taft, all of the puppies have been spayed or neutered and medically cleared.

If you’d like to get a puppy, pre-adoption applications are required.

Planning to add a pet to your family this holiday season?  Puppies and kittens do make wonderful presents, but there are a few things you should consider before taking this step:

  1. Will this be a welcome gift?  You may think your loved one will be overjoyed with a new pet, but please be sure this is the case.  Having a pet is a long-term commitment that should not be taken lightly.
  2. Is this the right choice of pet or breed?  Research characteristics of your chosen pet before you purchase or adopt.  Make sure the pet will fit your lifestyle and planned activities.  For example, a basset hound may not make an ideal jogging partner!
  3. Are you prepared?  As I mentioned, a pet is a long-term responsibility.  In addition to love, a commitment of both time and finances is required.  Are you ready for potty training?  Monthly puppy/kitten vaccin

Fleas in Fall?

Fleas in Fall?

Fleas in Fall?

Most everyone assumes that fleas are out-of-sight, out-of-mind once summer is over.  But, that is unfortunately not true.  Veterinarians actually see many cases of fleas and flea allergy dermatitis in the fall and winter months.  Why does this happen?  Well, the answer is found in the flea’s life cycle.

A flea’s life cycle has 4 stages:  1.

The hardest part

The hardest part

What is the most difficult part of your job?

Have you ever been asked that question?  Most of us have.  As a practicing veterinarian, the answer has to be euthanasia, putting a pet "to sleep."  The heartbreak travels from the pet owner to the veterinarian, to the assistants, to the secretary.  It has to be one of the most difficult, saddest moments.

To quote an author from Parade Magazine, "We've come to embrace our animals as family members.  We are not meant to lose our children.  And yet we take pets on, knowing we'll have to lose them.  It's the package deal, to the very end."  I could not have said it better.

But what makes euthanasia even more heartbreaking is when I recommend a treatment or referral to a specialist, and the client cannot pursue my recommendation because of money.  We all understand it.  Everything costs, and nothing is free.  The euthanasia procedure do
