Garland County hosts Zombie Fun Run 5k

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - United Way of Garland County is hosting a Zombie Fun Run 5K on October 31, 2015 at Cedar Glades Park located at 461 Wildcat Road.

The Fun Run is sponsored by Shop Oh Snap! Boutique, Bennett’s Auto Service, FBC Fitness and Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches. The route will involve a few walls to climb over, a log to jump over, zombies to avoid and a variety of elevations.

Early registration is $25 per person and ends on September 30, 2015. Late registration will end October 28, 2015 and is $30 per person. The check in will begin at 7 a.m. and the race will begin at 8:30 a.m. The first 250 who register will receive a goody bag and a t-shirt.

Prior to the race, the Hot Springs Beauty College will do zombie make-up for $5.00 per person. However, if an individual has their make-up done by the HSBC then they will be excluded from the costume contests.

Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival announces 2015 competition films

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The 24th annual Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival is proud to announce the films competing for the titles of Spa City Best U.S. Documentary, Spa City Best International Documentary and Spa City Best Sports Documentary.

These nominees are among the 140 films, features and shorts screening at the HSDFF from October 9-18.

Four named Arkansas Teacher of the Year state finalists

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Four outstanding teachers were named 2016 Arkansas Teacher of the Year state finalists at a recognition event today with Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Arkansas Department of Education Commissioner Johnny Key. 

“Selecting just four teachers from an exceptional group of talented educators was a difficult process,” Key said. “The four state finalists chosen, however, have demonstrated leadership, knowledge and the ability to inspire students in the classroom. I congratulate them, as well as their administrators and fellow educators.”

All Hot Springs residents encouraged to register for CivicReady

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – All Hot Springs residents are encouraged to register now for text, voice call or email emergency alerts with CivicReady, the city’s new emergency notification provider. 

The City of Hot Springs will officially transition from CodeRED to CivicReady on Thursday, October 15. Whether or not city residents are already registered with CodeRED, they will need to register again for the new system.

Registering for CivicReady takes only a couple of minutes by going to hsready.com and entering contact information along with specific notification preferences. Residents should confirm their subscription immediately after signup by checking their email. During signup or at any time afterwards, residents can provide multiple phone numbers and addresses to be reached in an emergency, including their residence, workplace, childcare facility, and the like.

Maxwell Blade's Festival of Magic visits Hot Springs

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The first ever Maxwell Blade’s Festival of Magic kicks off September 24 and runs through September 27 at Maxwell Blade’s Theatre of Magic and Comedy located at 121 Central Ave. in downtown Hot Springs.

While most of the shows will be held at the theater, Bank of the Ozarks Arena will host several performances, as will various venues throughout the city.

Blade has been performing in Hot Springs for nearly two decades and wants to bring talent from across the globe to perform magic and comedy for the families of Hot Springs and its visitors. Blade’s novelty shop, Maxwell Blade’s Museum of Oddities and Curiosities, stands just next door to the Theatre of Magic, and will be open for those audience members who want to take a piece of the show home with them.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Roller Coaster Race announced that registration is now open for its original-concept race coming to Magic Springs in Hot Springs, Ark. on Saturday, October 17.

The race takes place on the second weekend of “Magic Screams,” the park’s Halloween-themed event, and marks Roller Coaster Race’s sixth and final event of its 2015 season.

ASMSA opens Class of 2018 admissions cycle

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts has officially launched the search for the Class of 2018.
 
Students apply to ASMSA through a competitive admissions process that evaluates high school coursework, ACT/SAT scores, responses to essay questions, letters of recommendation and other accomplishments.  Finalist candidates are invited to attend Interview Weekends in April.  The process is similar to application at selective colleges and universities.
 
Students must submit their completed online application, test scores, and letters of recommendation no later than March 1, 2016.
