HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. (AP) - A Garland County man accused of fatally shooting his wife and daughter in has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

The Sentinel-Record reports that Eric Allen Reid entered his plea in Garland County Circuit Court on Monday. He is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

All case proceedings have been stayed until a mental evaluation of Reid is completed at the Arkansas State Hospital.

According to authorities, deputies responded to Reid's Hot Springs Village home on Oct. 20 after reports of shots fired. Police say they discovered the bodies of Reid's wife, 57-year-old Laura Reid, and his daughter, 32-year-old Mary Ann Reid.

Authorities say a handgun they believe was used in the shooting was recovered at the scene, and Reid was arrested.
