New Cardiologist joins Mercy in Hot Springs

Interventional cardiologist Dr. Srinivas Vengala has joined St. Joseph’s Mercy and the Mercy Heart and Vascular Center.

Dr. Vengala comes to Mercy after spending the past three years in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. At UAB, he was a fellow and assistant professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease.

As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Vengala deals with catheter-based treatment of heart diseases. Some of the advantages of minimally invasive interventional cardiology are decreased pain, less risk of infection, avoidance of large scars and shorter post-operative recovery times.

Dr. Vengala is also adding to the services previously offered by the Mercy Heart and Vascular Center. He will do Venous Ablation (treatment for superficial venous reflux), Carotid Stenting, Radial Catheterization and Atrial Septal Defect Closure (closure of small holes in the heart without surgery).

He has done fellowships in cardiology, interventional cardiology and echocardiography, and he is board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases. At Birmingham, he was actively involved in research using tissue Doppler imaging, contrast echocardiography and live three-dimensional echocardiography.

Dr. Vengala previously worked at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Avalon Medical Center in Muscle Shoals, Ala., and attended medical school at Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad, India.

Dr. Vengala is a member of the American Heart Association, American Society of Echocardiography and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He is seeing patients at the Mercy Heart and Vascular Center along with Dr. Frederick Heinemann, Dr. Oyidie Igbokidi, Dr. Stanley Josef, Dr. Greg St. John and Dr. Bhavna Mohandas.
