Hot Springs apartment reduced to rubble after suspicious fire

HOT SPRNGS, Ark. (KTHV) – Hot Springs Fire Marshalls are investigating a fire that occurred Wednesday night on the 400 block of Spring Street.

The fire broke out just after 11 p.m. Wednesday, September 17. The old Victorian home that is now a pile of debris was built in 1879 and was recently converted into apartments. Fire Marshall's say they don't think the house sparked on its own, leaving prospective buyers without a property, and an owner without a check.

"It's a weird coincidence, because this morning it was supposed to be up for sale," said Kyle Walsh, neighbor.

Because what was supposed to be a 5,700-foot property behind it, is now embers and caution tape.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Four outstanding teachers were named 2016 Arkansas Teacher of the Year state finalists at a recognition event today with Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Arkansas Department of Education Commissioner Johnny Key.

“Selecting just four teachers from an exceptional group of talented educators was a difficult process,” Key said. “The four state finalists chosen, however, have demonstrated leadership, knowledge and the ability to inspire students in the classroom. I congratulate them, as well as their administrators and fellow educators.”

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – All Hot Springs residents are encouraged to register now for text, voice call or email emergency alerts with CivicReady, the city’s new emergency notification provider.

The City of Hot Springs will officially transition from CodeRED to CivicReady on Thursday, October 15. Whether or not city residents are already registered with CodeRED, they will need to register again for the new system.

Registering for CivicReady takes only a couple of minutes by going to hsready.com and entering contact information along with specific notification preferences. Residents should confirm their subscription immediately after signup by checking their email. During signup or at any time afterwards, residents can provide multiple phone numbers and addresses to be reached in an emergency, including their residence, workplace, childcare facility, and the like.

Maxwell Blade's Festival of Magic visits Hot Springs

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The first ever Maxwell Blade’s Festival of Magic kicks off September 24 and runs through September 27 at Maxwell Blade’s Theatre of Magic and Comedy located at 121 Central Ave. in downtown Hot Springs.

While most of the shows will be held at the theater, Bank of the Ozarks Arena will host several performances, as will various venues throughout the city.

Blade has been performing in Hot Springs for nearly two decades and wants to bring talent from across the globe to perform magic and comedy for the families of Hot Springs and its visitors. Blade’s novelty shop, Maxwell Blade’s Museum of Oddities and Curiosities, stands just next door to the Theatre of Magic, and will be open for those audience members who want to take a piece of the show home with them.

7 ASMSA students named National Merit Semifinalists

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Seven students at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts have been named 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition Semifinalists.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. today announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring.

ASMSA students named as Semifinalists are:

• Hannah Carr of Haskell, daughter of Brent and Nickie Carr;

• Rex Hearn of Bryant, son of Keaton and Dawn Hearn;

• YeongJoon Hwang of Jonesboro, son of Yeonsang Hwang and Kyoungsuk Ahn;

• Taryn Imamura of Conway, daughter of Dr. Bryan and Cynthia Imamura;

Roller Coaster Race Coming to Magic Springs on Oct. 17

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Roller Coaster Race announced that registration is now open for its original-concept race coming to Magic Springs in Hot Springs, Ark. on Saturday, October 17.

The race takes place on the second weekend of “Magic Screams,” the park’s Halloween-themed event, and marks Roller Coaster Race’s sixth and final event of its 2015 season.
