Patriarch of McClard's Bar-B-Q dies at 91

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - The nationally recognized McClard's Bar-B-Q in Hot Springs opened its doors a little late on Thursday.

The patriarch of the McClard family, J.D. McClard, passed away on Tuesday.

McClard retired from the family business about 10 years ago, but today his grandson Scott, told THV11 about J.D.'s legacy.

"He delivered his world famous BBQ to gangsters in the 40's and presidents of the free world. We will keep alive his tradition of hard work, beliefs and behaviors that started in 1928. His daily jokes and laughter will be missed be many."

J.D. was 91 years old.

ASMSA, Lakeside School District introduces Japanese language program

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts and the Lakeside School District are offering their students a unique opportunity — the ability to study Japanese from a native speaker.

Aozora Ishizaki is teaching Japanese language and culture to students at ASMSA as well as Lakeside High School and third-graders at Lakeside Intermediate School. The program is the only Japanese foreign language exchange program of its kind in Arkansas. ASMSA and Lakeside received a $30,000 grant from The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles to provide Japanese language instruction to the students.

Ishizaki is teaching a Japanese class at ASMSA three days per week. She teaches a class each day at Lakeside High School as well as working with third-graders at the intermediate school three afternoons a week.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - United Way of Garland County is hosting a Zombie Fun Run 5K on October 31, 2015 at Cedar Glades Park located at 461 Wildcat Road.

The Fun Run is sponsored by Shop Oh Snap! Boutique, Bennett’s Auto Service, FBC Fitness and Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches. The route will involve a few walls to climb over, a log to jump over, zombies to avoid and a variety of elevations.

Early registration is $25 per person and ends on September 30, 2015. Late registration will end October 28, 2015 and is $30 per person. The check in will begin at 7 a.m. and the race will begin at 8:30 a.m. The first 250 who register will receive a goody bag and a t-shirt.

Prior to the race, the Hot Springs Beauty College will do zombie make-up for $5.00 per person. However, if an individual has their make-up done by the HSBC then they will be excluded from the costume contests.

Now you can brunch like the royals at Castle on Stagecoach

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - A restaurant in Little Rock is allowing the public to travel back in time for a brunch with royalty.

Nestled on 100 acres of land on Stagecoach Road in Little Rock sits a castle fit for a queen or king and now, open to the public for events. The Castle on Stagecoach has been offering the venue for rentals suitable for all types of events including weddings, corporate parties, bridal showers, holiday dinners and so much more.

The owners decided it was time to start a monthly event in an effort to allow anyone in the public to come enjoy a champagne brunch, tour of the grounds and enjoy live music.

"The food and experience is wonderful. Everyone should experience this," said guest, Rance Golden.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (KTHV) - This region and state is so well known for good barbecue and blues music, and the two came together on Saturday in Hot Springs.

The Spa City's long-running blues festival shifted to Oaklawn and joined up with a fast growing barbecue competition, creating the Hot Springs Blues and BBQ Festival.

Top national artists like Los Lonely Boys and Keb Mo performed, and while the aroma wafted over the crowd, several young artists are getting their big break.

"Area high school kids who as a little as a year ago had never played an instrument before. So, we put them together, gave them some training. Some local artists helped, and they will be on stage today," said Rob Pratt.

The event's last day will be Sunday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. You can sample the barbecue from the competing teams for $5 after 3 p.m. on Sunday.

LAKE HAMILTON, Ark. (KTHV) -- In Lake Hamilton, there's a retreat helping to heal wounds that sometimes even a lifetime can't mend.

It's called 'While We're Waiting,' a retreat for parents who have lost a child.

"People would consider our lives as go go go," said Tiffany McCain, a mother of three boys in Lake Hamilton.

The joys in our lives comes in all shapes in sizes.

"Yeah I just call [our kids] by size: small medium and large," joked husband Kevin.

Small is 2-year-old Riggs. Medium is 6-year-old Eli and large is 9-year-old Lucas.

"It's busy, it's fun, it's chaotic sometimes," Tiffany continued.

It's a lot of testosterone for one mom to handle.

"They're only in your house for 18 years," she jokes with a laugh. "Thank goodness."
